Long
before Central Tilba was settled
and developed, Gulaga
was a site of great spiritual
significance to the local Yuin
people.
Their descendants still hold
the mountain in special reverence
which can be experienced on
a conducted tour with Umbarra
Cultural Tours. Their guides
will explain the history of
the mountain and why it is of
such significance to them.

Development
of Central Tilba |
|
|
Central
Tilba is a Heritage
village classified under the
National Trust due to its unique
cluster development on the beautiful
rolling volcanic slopes of Gulaga/
Mount Dromedary.
The area was settled by Europeans
well over 160 years ago, but
it was not until gold was discovered
in 1850, that people flocked
to the district.
When the gold started to peter
out around the turn of the century,
dairying had become firmly established.
The village of Central
Tilba was founded in
1895, when Sam Bate created
a subdivision on his land and
sold lots at auction.

There
are several publications available
for those interested in the
area. Two recommended publications
are 'MOUNT DROMEDARY a pretty
high mountain' put out by the
Forestry Commission of New South
Wales and 'TILBA TIMES' written
by local historians, Laurelle
Pacey and Norm Hoyer.
Laurelle has written a number
of books on the history of various
places in the area. The local
Narooma Historical Society also
has a brochure available, which
details a walking tour of the
district.
'Tilba: Living History' is an
excellent brochure available
in the local region which outlines
many of the local businesses
and attractions. It includes
maps, historical information
and contact details.
